Ex-cel-lence

When I think of this word, I think of the Cub Scout Motto: "Do Your Best", with a tickle. The kind of tickle that teases you to add a stretch to your activity.

I do not think that perfection and excellence are synonymous. In fact striving for perfection seems to diminish our joy while working with excellence deepens our satisfaction. Perfection seems to focus on results. Excellence becomes a barometer of the process. The lack of perfection is often accompanied by hopelessness and depression.

Excellence encourages us to dispel our limitations while whispering balance. Perfectionists often sacrifice the means for the end. Workers in excellence know the means is the end.

Excellence has to measured internally. External accountings are inaccurate indicators of internal assets.

Perfection is a judgement. Excellence is a verdict which can be easily reversed when new evidence is presented.
